Darren ‘Blunt’ Berridge of John Street, Newtown was found dead last Friday, the second murder to take place in the area in about two weeks.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. last Friday, police responded to a report in the Newtown area to find a bloodied man lying in the drain on Neverson Street.  The twenty-six-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by the District Medical Officer.

According to a law enforcement source, Berridge appeared to have been shot three times about his abdomen and chest area. The source said he was lying on his back, sprawled in the drain on the street that driving instructors frequent. The official cause of death was listed as hemorrhage and shock.

It has been rumored that the shooting was retaliation for the death of thirty-nine-year-old Dave ‘Jahman’ Browne, who was shot in the head on George Street, Newtown on Aug. 31.

Police would not speculate to motive but appealed to the public to come forward with any information relating to the crime.

Some residents in the area have said that they are growing increasingly fearful after a marked increase in murders and shootings in Newtown. A few have claimed that the East versus West gang war is causing innocent blood to be shed as innocent persons are being targeted merely because of family ties.

“It’s almost every night you hearing gunshots barking up here. They used to shoot after one another but now they shooting people because they got some beef with someone you related to. Imagine you ain’t in nothing with them but cool so you lose your life…and for what? There needs to be more police patrol in this area, not just see them come when somebody done dead,” one frightened woman said on the promise of anonymity.
