A development project underway in the Buckley’s area is causing some concern among homeowners in the area.

According to information reaching this paper, a section of land to the immediate east of Best Buy supermarket is currently being cleared for the construction of a cinema.

Circulating rumours have it that the persons responsible for the land clearing had begun tearing down the fence of one property on the edge of the lot without notifying the owner.

The Observer investigated the incident only to be told by the homeowner on Tuesday that he had been consulted by persons representing the investor(s). The man asked that his name and some of the particulars of the arrangement not be disclosed, but said he had struck a tentative deal and would be adequately compensated.

“He did mention that because nothing had been signed up till that point, he was surprised to hear that his fence had been torn down.

“I was told about the fence and it came as a shock because I know we had not signed anything yet. I went to the property and saw it and then spoke to someone who was dealing with that. I was told that my fence was torn down by mistake,” the man explained.

The Observer visited the site and confirmed that the sizable lot was being cleared for development and that the fence was partial dismantled.

According to an unconfirmed source, the company that owned Caribbean Cinemas in St. Marten was the principle investor for the project.

After The Observer launched its investigation, Caribbean Cinemas issued a press release on Thursday afternoon

According to the release the company will be opening a new multiplex cinema at Buckley’s Estate at an approximate cost of ‘several million US dollars’.

The release continued to say that the land and two house lots were purchased from private individuals.

Construction of the 7-auditorium complex and 250 car parking lot is scheduled to begin early next month.
