Some Nevis residents were left in the dark just before dawn Wednesday after a computer problem caused a power outage, according to the Nevis Electrical Company.

“On Wednesday morning we experienced a software glitch on one of our generator control systems at the Prospect Power Station which caused the generator to go offline,” NEVLEC general manager Mr. Cartwright Farrell said. “As a result we lost power to some parts of the island. Safety procedures during switching lengthened the duration of the outage.”

Mr. Farrell continued “NEVLEC would like to extend sincere apologies to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused by this brownout. NEVLEC is actively engaged in upgrading the software and hardware for the control systems to avoid the recurrence of this glitch. NEVLEC is also actively pursuing the addition of new generation at the power station in the form of new diesel generators and also through renewable energy sources in the form of wind energy and geothermal energy. NEVLEC remains resolute in providing a high quality service to all of our customers.”
