Corruption With Impunity Editorial
It has been a week now since we talked to you about some Nevis Island Administration transactions which seemed questionable and to date we have not had one word from the Minister of Communications Mr. Alexis Jeffers. Mr. Jeffers could have telephoned our Managing Editor refuting the story or even written a letter to the editor condemning our story or explaining the necessity for the Anguilla toys at a whopping $500,000 so far. Jeffers could have gone on VON radio or on Nevis TV or even on ZIZ, but nothing. Despite a public that is asking questions, not a word from Alexis. It is that after only 30 months in office the CCM has become so pompous that they feel that they owe no one any explanation? More than $40,000 per month for three pieces of toy looking equipment, corruption regarding an almost $200 per day for a truck that is not even properly registered? The truck is being paid $200 paid even when it does not work and reports of fill from a government quarry being shifted around as a means of the origin not being detected and is sold, only to have the money pocketed by certain individuals. Imagine what this $500,000 could have done if it was spread around several backhoe operators who are equipped to carry out the functions of those three Anguilla toys. Food could have been put on the tables of several of our backhoe operators that could hardly find work. But instead this unexplainable scheme that Alexis’ Ministry of Works is engaged in. Not a word. The NIA is now a law unto themselves and as such corruption with impunity.
