The Cuban Government has reaffirmed its solidarity with St.Kitts/Nevis by making another 60 scholarships available to locals.

Last year the Cuban Government gave nine scholarships to locals to study medicine at a university level in Cuba.

The current scholarships being offered are for basic nursing training with focus on HIV/AIDS treatment.

“These scholarships will allow for both males and females to travel to Cuba to study nursing on a 30 month course,” said Yarine Ramirez, Public Relations person in the St. Kitts Cuban Embassy. “Additionally, the students would be required to first take Spanish courses for three months, since the classes will be taught entirely in spanish. The scholarships are made available totally free of cost to the students.”

Persons obtaining the scholarships would have to be ready for travel by June 20.

Yarine said the Embassy received verbal notice regarding the availability of the scholarships on May 26. The Embassy will be assisting people who wish to take advantage of this opportunity, realising the brief period applicants would have to prepare themselves.

Applicants should have their high school Certificate or at least a  Grade 9 Certificate with their ninth Grade’s Grade Point Average Certificate, and preferably come from low-income families.

Person interested in these scholarships can contact the Human Resources Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Students will graduate as Comprehensive General Nurses with specialised training in dealing with HIV-AIDS patients. St. Vincent and the Grenadines was also the recipient of 90 such scholarships.

Cuba has had a longstanding, mutually beneficial friendship with the Federation’s Government and its citizens.

In March, the Cuban Delegation pledged some 140,000 energy-saving light bulbs to be distributed free to citizens of the Federation.
