Group faces life behind bars Director of Public Prosecution Travers Sinanan confirmed yesterday (May 13) that he did not seek the death penalty for the five men found guilty of Gregory Zakers’ murder. Speaking with The Observer, the DPP said he made no sentencing recommendation during a pre-sentencing hearing with trial judge Justice Darshan Ramdhani on Monday. On Friday (May 9) Moses Gardener, Shenroy Francis, Nelson Challenger, Jomi Rawlins, and Glenroy Smithen were convicted of the 2008 murder. Justice Ramdhani indicated that sentencing would be in about 3 weeks after the compiling, submission and review of psychiatric and social inquiry reports. The five young men, who have sat in Her Majesty’s Prison for 6 years awaiting trial, are now face spending the next 25 years to life in jail.
