To Nevis, With Love
One of the leading mobile telecommunication companies in Nevis, Digicel, continues its efforts to fulfill its promise of shoring up confidence in service and integrity to its customers. The company, which has just opened a new micro cell radio base in Jessups, launched a brand new store on Friday, May 25, 2007 in downtown Charlestown.
The ceremony commemorating the event was held at the store’s location at Henville Building and was attended by top government officials from both Saint Kitts and Nevis including Deputy Governor Eustace George, Deputy Premier Hensley Daniel, other ministers in the Nevis island Administration and members of the local corporate community.
Digicel’s Country Manager, Donovan White announced that he was pleased and excited about what the day represented for Digicel and the people of Nevis.
“It is a great turnout. It has been a long road and we have always promised that once we are able to provide the coverage and service in Nevis, we will bring the full Digicel experience of ‘Expect more, get more’ to the people of Nevis. Now that we have done that, we will continue to work with the people of Nevis to give them the very best service that we can provide and I hope that we have a very long rope of partnership with them,” he said.
Donovan also mentioned that for the last 14 months the Digicel dealership in Nevis had been run by TDC, but this would now change.
“For the last 14 months, the dealership in Nevis had been undertaken by TDC Limited. We have had a long and good relationship but at this time TDC has decided they want to relieve themselves of the dealership. We just want everybody to understand that the difference between us moving here and the dealership not being operated by TDC anymore has no negative impact on us. It is simply two companies operating together and one willing to do business a little differently. So we are here today opening this brand store with our new dealer, Patricia Mourillon,” he said.
During his address, Deputy Premier, Hon. Hensley Daniel disclosed that the NIA endorses and welcomes the diversification being brought to Nevis by the telecommunication companies,
“We in NIA welcome the engagement of the private sector with more regards to the telecommunications industry. If you have been living in Nevis for the past 20-25 years, you would recognize that we were accustomed to one bank, one this and one that but as we move and as the global trend demands that we diversify the economy, we have come out to have more banks and of course we now have 3 telecommunications providers.” he said.
He however urged Digicel to rightly make use of whatever opportunity they have at their disposal in developing the community.
“In many cases, several companies often miss the opportunities in engaging and partnering with the local community – especially in a small community like this. Digicel has a golden opportunity to help promote economic and social development and we believe that as a private sector, they must take the lead role in moving the economy of this country forward.” he said.
Darren Derrick, general manager for Digicel OECS North, expressed his pleasure at the changes and progressive steps being taken by his company for the betterment of the people of Nevis.
“We have been in the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis for some time. However, we have been hampered by our ability to provide the type of service we would like because of our coverage issues in Nevis. We listened to the people of Nevis say they needed better coverage and representation. It is in respect of that, all this is being done and I think now that it has been brought here, it is for the people of Nevis to experience,” he said.
Digicel’s Public Relations Officer Jerry George said one of the reasons the new store is being established would be to better look at the marketing opportunities in Nevis.
“Well, this is the second store here in Nevis. We are opening this store under a new management and it is going to be a new opportunity to look at marketing in Nevis because when we came we looked at what we were doing and we were not happy because we were not approaching Nevis the right way we wanted.
“One of the reasons being that we couldn’t actually focus since we didn’t have the coverage we wanted. Now that we have corrected that in the sense that a new site was launched in Jessups a couple weeks ago, we can better deliver our services to the people of Nevis. Better service, better coverage and better support,” he said.
The official opening of the store commenced when the Deputy Governor, Eustace George went on to cut the ribbon while musical entertainment was ongoing.
In recognition of the same event, Charlestown area on Saturday witnessed a number of crowd, when Digicel had a live concert dubbed “Digicel Live In the Square” where the Casanova Band performed. The event started at 6.00pm and was concluded around midnight.
