(Molineux Site, St. Kitts) The Dr. Timothy Harris Inner City Basketball League began with much fanfare on Saturday, June 21 at 6:15pm with the Cadet Drum Corp leading the march past of teams from Fraites.
Many people turned out in support of the league.
Mr. Lloyd Lazaar, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, who endorsed the league, addressed the gathering.
“Sports is such an important vehicle for the development of our young people,” Mr. Lazaar said.
Mr. Crace Lewis, League Commissioner, asked for a minute of silence to remember Eston Dejaun Sharry who was murdered in the community on May 22. Eston was a player in the league.
Mr. Lewis in giving an overview of the league said that the league had grown over the years from strength to strength. The league is in its fifth year. The league has produced three national players in the persons of Sylvester “Buzz” White, Cameron Matthew and Troy Wattley.
Dr. Garfield Alexander, representative for St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association, who endorsed the league, said that any community league is a good league and a breeding ground to produce players at the national level.
Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency #7, said that his interest in the league was elevated higher when he saw the hundreds of young people coming together to support the teams. He said this has been a cause of much pride and joy. He pledged his support to continue to reach out to his constituents in bringing about social and community development.
The opening ceremony was interspersed with entertainment from Janile Henry, Rolstein Bartlette and the Jingle Bells String Band, Raimon Browne and the Grand Masters.
After the opening ceremony, there was a celebrity game featuring some of the older basketball players. Knock out games between the league’s teams followed but came to a pre-mature end because of a power cut.
This year the league promises to have ten teams competing. The League runs from June 21-August 23. Information about the league can be attained at
