ENTERPRISING YOUTHS SET EXAMPLE By John Denny Observer Reporter
(Charlestown, Nevis) – In these dark days of gang violence and youth gone astray, there are good examples being set by young people that unfortunately seldom get any press. There are many good children in the Federation, either striving to achieve more through study, working hard at jobs and sometimes doing both. An example being set for the youth of the Federation is by two brothers, Alister and Anestor Byron, who weekly set up a small vegetable stand outside the market in downtown Charlestown. They both also attend Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College during the week learning building trades. Alister is studying the carpentry trade and Anestor is studying to become an electrician. For several years they have also made extra money buying vegetables in bulk in St. Kitts and selling them in Charlestown. “We want to make a difference,’said Anestor. “By the time a boy is in 4th or 5th Form, he is basically done with school and then so many jump on a gang. We try to take things to a different level.”By a different level, he means there are much better alternatives and choices in life than joining gangs and being a criminal. “We are appealing to young men that guns and violence is not the answer,’said Anestor. “Stay in school. Study hard. Go to work and work hard. Do things to make your parents proud of you. Those are the things that make your life better.”Anestor and Alister can be found on Saturday mornings at the Charlestown Market
