(Charlestown, Nevis) ” Lower oil prices mean lower gasoline prices and entering the holiday stretch of the year, most of us would rather buy Christmas presents than spend all our money at the gas station. The recent dip in fuel prices has caused an increase in driving according to some motorists and gas station attendants. “With the price this low, we are definitely selling a lot more gas than we used to,” said one attendant. “More people go ahead and fill up instead of just putting in a few gallons.” Those driving are taking advantage of the lower price. “After I filled up the other day and it cost me so little, I just went for a drive all the way around the island,” said a motorist. “I like driving, but a few weeks ago it was so expensive, I only drove where I needed to and never offered anyone a ride. I hope it stays low.” The price gasoline has been falling steadily since July, when oil prices were at their highest, about US$147 per barrel. After falling below US$50 per barrel earlier this week, oil is back to US$53. Four months ago, Federation motorists were paying an average of about $16.80 per gallon. Today, the price for gasoline on Nevis is under $9.20. That’s lower than the average price in January, 2008, when gasoline was about $13 per gallon.
