The twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has recorded its 16th homicide for the year with the shooting-death of a young man who is believed to hail from New Road Housing.

Reports reaching The Observer states that shortly before 7:00 a.m. on Thursday (Jun. 30), Khoy ‘Red Rat’ Jeffers was shot multiple times while in the vicinity of an alley in College Street Ghaut, Basseterre.

This media house learned that a unit from the Emergency Medical Services was summoned and he was rushed to the Joseph N France General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

In an effort to gain more information on the incident, The Observer contacted the Police Force’ Public Relations Office and was told by Grell Browne that he could only say that there was a shooting incident in Basseterre but no word was passed to him concerning Jeffers’ death.

On Friday, November 10, 2006, Jeffers was arrested and charged, along with three others, with the murder of Michelle Weekes-Benjamin, whose partly decomposed body was discovered in a septic tank in a building under construction on Rosemary Lane some two days after she failed to report for work at the St. Kitts-Nevis Anguilla National Bank at the Pelican Mall in Basseterre.

He was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison but was subsequently exonerated of the charge by the High Court.
