The St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services will be hosting its 8th annual Summer Safety Program from July 4-6 in Nevis and from 11-13 in St. Kitts.
The program will target children aged 5-12 and teach them the fundamentals in fire prevention, water safety and traffic safety.
Over the years, the department has recognised problems in these areas in this age group and began the program to educate these children and thus lessen the hazard for them.
Indeed, the program has been fulfilling its purpose as the fire department has seen a reduction in the number of cases involving children in the past few years.
However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that children continue to remain out of harm’s way.
“There are a number of things parents bypass every day that may be fire hazards, like keeping matches out of reach of children and never leaving the stove unattended when cooking. It is important that parents pay much more attention to fire safety practices in the home,” says Everette O’Garro, chairman of the Welfare Association.
Parents as well as children can now look forward to this program, as it will be a significant step forward to a safer future.
