(Charlestown, Nevis) ” In an effort to strengthen the social fabric of Nevis, the Department of Agriculture will be hosting the Inter-Culture Food Fair today, Oct. 24, at the Charlestown Villa from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A variety of foods and preparation techniques representing the culturally diverse population of Nevis will be showcased for the benefit of the public, according to the Deputy Director of Agriculture Kiethley Amory. “We are planning to have cooking displays and discussion of different methods of preparation from about 10 countries that include Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Dominica, Montserrat, Kenya, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, China/Taiwan, Barbados and Nevis” he said. “Different cultures not only prepare foods differently, but use different parts of the plants than others. Our objective is to make this an intermingling of the different cultures on Nevis to strengthen our social fabric.” The Inter-Cultural Food Fair is part of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s World Food Day. World Food Day provides an occasion to highlight the plight of 923 million undernourished people in the world. Most of them live in rural areas where their main source of income is the agricultural sector. Global warming and the bio fuel boom ” ethanol and biodiesel – are now threatening to push the number of hungry even higher in the decades to come. “With the increased use of bio fuels and changing weather patterns, everyone needs to be more food conscious,” said the director. “By returning our focus to growing our own food we can achieve sustainability. There is no reason for Nevis to have to import so much food to feed ourselves. The fair will provide us with knowledge to prepare many of the things we grow here in a new variety of ways.” Exhibitors will also display and sell products from the Nevis Growers Cooperatives, the Nevis Agro Processors and the Nevis Livestock Farmers Association.”” The Nevis Department of Agriculture will be hosting the Inter-Cultural Food Fair today, Oct. 24, at the Charlestown Villa from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Recipes, techniques and ingredients from 10 different countries will be on display and available for sampling. The department hopes to strengthen the fabric of Nevisian society through the intermingling of diverse culinary culture.
