(Charlestown, Nevis) – Contrary to popular rumor, no foreign workers on the Four Seasons project have arrived on Nevis, as of press time, according to chief Labor Officer Averil Williams. “Right now, there are 10 project managers looking over the site. There are no Mexicans here,”Ms. Williams said yesterday. DCK World Wide is the general contractor doing the refurbishment of the resort that was damaged last October by Hurricane Omar. Williams and some of the team from DCK have been in meetings discussing some of the issues facing the labor department with the eventual influx of a foreign labor force, namely health related. Another rumor floating about the island was that the Mexican laborers coming in, had been on a project in Anguilla, but Williams said she believes they are coming from Mexico, which among many, leaves concerns about H1N1 flu virus. A walk down Pinney’s Beach reveals there is very little construction activity going on at the resort, but Williams said there are about 15 locals working on the site with the project managers. Ads are posted by DCK in this week’s Observer looking to fill a variety of management positions such as Operations Manger, Project Manger, Engineers, cost accounting and secretary to name a few. Those wishing to apply for skilled labor positions can attend the Job Fair next Monday, June 16, at the Methodist Church in Charlestown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hopes have been expressed by the Labor Department to the project mangers that at least half of the workers hired for rebuilding the resort would come from the local labor pool.
