Guayana’s Ministry of Amerindian Affairs has placed cultural preservation and youth involvement at the center of its five-year plan.

Speaking at the launch of the Amerindian Art Exhibition and Fashion Show, Minister Sarah Browne said she was proud of her Indigenous roots and saw her new role as a chance to amplify Indigenous voices nationwide. She linked her ministry’s vision to this year’s Amerindian Heritage Month theme, “Igniting Unity, Celebrating Progress and Advancing Culture.”

Browne stressed that youth empowerment and cultural preservation would be her top goals. “Our culture is who we are as a people. We must be proud of it,” she said, adding that programs such as cultural exchanges will help keep traditions alive for future generations.

She promised to meet with young people directly to hear their ideas, saying that collaboration is key to shaping new opportunities and reviving traditional practices. “I can’t do it alone. It’s our ministry. My doors will always be open,” she noted.

Closing her remarks, Browne called for unity and teamwork, stressing that “in unity there is strength” and that cultural pride must go hand in hand with wider national development.
