Last week, news stated that an official from the Cuban Embassy allegedly slapped an eight-year-old young boy at the Beach Allen Primary School. Apparently the boy was playing a game called “Freeze” with the daughter of the official and accidentally knocked her over.
According to reports the young boy said the official had seen the incident and slapped him twice then pulled him to the office. The official and the young boy were taken to the police station for questioning. The official was not arrested because of his diplomatic immunity but the Cuban Embassy did say that they were currently dealing with the matter through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Many were dissatisfied with the ‘hush down’ and decided to express their views about the incident. The Observer hit the streets to find out what society had to say about the matter while they await the outcome.
Lapsey, Fort Street – I think that he should get some form of punishment because he had no right to slap off the youngster. Children will always be children. His diplomatic rights don’t mean he should be free to do things like that. There must be some way for him to correct the wrong he did and this needs to be looked into.
Quincy, Village – I think that it is wrong for someone to come to our country and do something like that and get away with it. I think he should be punished in some way. It is also my opinion that this diplomat should be deported and if necessary have someone else fill his position. At least he will no longer have rights to this country.
Maxwell, Newtown – This diplomat should not have taken his own action. I think that he should have dealt with it in a more appropriate manner. Instead he made his own judgment and slapped the young boy so who is going to judge him? Justice has to be served at some point to satisfy the child and his parents as well as the community. I think that they should deport him. This man was wrong to the hit this child and it is our country and we must do something about it.
Diva, Basseterre – All I have to say is that this man should try slapping me, someone his size, and we wouldn’t even be answering these questions because he would have already gotten it back. I mean you don’t take advantage of someone – especially a young child. Let him pick on someone his own size.
Leandro, Newtown – If that had been my child then I would not have stood for something like that. I can imagine how the parents of that child must be feeling at this time. They need to do something about this matter because I have a young child and I do not agree with what he did.
