St. Kitts and Nevis today, September 16, observes National Heroes Day, honouring five distinguished figures whose contributions have played a significant role in the Federation’s political, social and economic development.

The annual observance coincides with the birthday of the late Right Excellent Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, who became the country’s first National Hero when the honour was introduced in 1998.

The Right Excellent Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, a native of St. Paul’s, served as the first Premier and Chief Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis. He was a prominent advocate for workers’ rights and played a leading role in the political movement that culminated in the Federation’s independence in 1983.

The Right Excellent Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell, who also served as Premier and Chief Minister, was recognised as a National Hero in 2004. Before and during his political career, he was active in the trade union movement and was involved in issues affecting workers and social development.

The Right Excellent Joseph Nathaniel France was also conferred with National Hero status in 2004. A prominent trade unionist and former Social Services Minister, France was closely associated with efforts to improve social conditions and public services.

Nevis’ contribution to the Federation’s political history is represented by the Right Excellent Sir Simeon Daniel, the island’s first Premier and founder of the Nevis Reformation Party. He was named a National Hero in 2013.

The Right Excellent Dr. Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds, the Federation’s first Prime Minister, became the fifth National Hero in 2015. He was also the first living recipient of the country’s highest national honour.

Together, the five men represent different chapters in the Federation’s political and social development, with their public service spanning trade unionism, social advocacy, public administration and national leadership.

National Heroes Day provides an opportunity for citizens to recognise their contributions while reflecting on the political and social developments that helped shape modern St. Kitts and Nevis.
