SAN JOSE – The Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) Manuel Otero has embarked on a work agenda in the United States, where he will meet with high-level authorities of international organizations as well as government and credit agencies in order to consolidate partnerships aimed at fostering agricultural and rural development, particularly in the most vulnerable regions.

Otero will participate in the opening session of the general assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS). He will also meet with Luis Alberto Moreno, president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), at the credit agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

After participating in the second plenary session of the OAS assembly, Otero will attend the inauguration of an event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of FONTAGRO, a funding mechanism for innovative projects related to family farming, which IICA sponsors together with the IDB. Participants at the event will discuss funding for the agriculture sector of Latin America and the Caribbean as well as the future work agenda for the 2030-2050 period.

“We will renew our institute’s commitment to FONTAGRO and express our firm belief that a partnership between FONTAGRO, IICA and IDB strengthens a shared vision that translates into better and more opportunities for agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean,” Otero said.

The work agenda of the director general of IICA in Washington will also include a meeting with Ted McKinney, U.S. Department of Agriculture under secretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs. Subsequently, Otero will travel to New York, where he will meet with members of the Clinton Foundation to discuss potential joint initiatives in the Caribbean.

Additionally, as part of a work agenda with the United Nations (UN), the director general of IICA will meet with Liu Zhenmin, under-secretary-general for economic and social affairs of the UN; Yannick Glemarec, deputy executive director of UN Women; and Martín García Moritán, permanent pepresentative of Argentina to the UN.

IICA is the specialized agency for agriculture in the Inter-American system, with a mission to encourage, promote and support its 34 member states in their efforts to achieve agricultural development and rural well-being through international technical cooperation of excellence.
