In honour of slavery fighters

The authorities in Sierra Leone say they’ll be changing street names in the capital Freetown.

Those named after British historical figures will be changed to those of Africans who fought against the transatlantic slave trade.

The mayor of Freetown Winstanley Bankole-Johnson said the role played by abolitionists of African descent had been obscured in history, and the move would help rectify this.

Freetown was founded in 1787 as a home for freed slaves.

The planned changes coincides with the bicentenary being marked at the weekend of the act abolishing the slave trade in the British Empire.
