Indications are that both the central government in Basseterre and the island administration in Nevis are getting flurries of applications for hotels, resorts, villa and condominium developments.
Most of these project proposals entail beach front properties.
There are few beachfront real estate locations left in St. Kitts and Nevis.
This places a severe demand on what is left and often pressure is brought to bear on government to make available what is left solely for development.
Right now in Nevis, pressure is coming on the Parry-led administration in reference to two properties. The first is the 14 acres reserved by the CCM administration for beach and recreation for the people in Nevis.
The second is more than two acres reserved again by the CCM administration at Herbert Beach.
The Parry administration is under pressure to give up both lots of land for development, thus displacing locals when they want to enjoy one of Nevis’ best attributes, the lovely and refreshing beaches.
The Observer encourages the government to continue to be friendly to investors and to offer them what are necessary to attract them to our showers and invest.
Nevis and St. Kitts need investment.
High level and good paying jobs are needed to provide the kind of standard of living that the people of these islands deserve.
Government must be cognizant of the fact that it is the people of these islands that made the tourism industry do so well.
Those smiling ladies at the Four Seasons and Marriott have more to smile about than the pay they are expecting at the end of the week. It is the freedom which they now have to enjoy Pinney’s and Herbert Beach and enjoy themselves with their families and friends.
Mr. Parry must be strong and maintain those 14 acres for the people of Nevis’ enjoyment. Also the two plus acres at Herbert Beach.
He and his men must withstand the pressures and put the people of Nevis first.
We must not fool ourselves in believing that once development comes local people will be free to bathe in front of the hotels. Locals would not be welcome neither would they feel welcomed.
How many locals pack a cooler and go down on the beach in front of the Four Seasons or Marriott to spend the day?
It is the right of the people for their government to provide meaningful places of recreation for them.
The people of Nevis and St. Kitts are relying on Parry and Douglas to negotiate arrangements which will benefit all the people of these two islands.
