Calypsonian Isoursop says his hit song that throws heavy punches at reigning King turned politician Konris Maynard “is nothing personal”. “One Song”has been a leading song at calypso tents this year and has received much airplay. Each time Isoursop has performed at calypso tents, he has been called back for an encore. The song is almost a parody of King Konris’ crown-winning piece from 2007 which bears the same name. The Observer caught up Isoursop at a calypso tent in Cayon this week and asked if he felt he had taken the social and political satire a bit too far. The song mocks Maynard’s switch to politics and also takes swipes at members of his family. “I don’t think so. I told everybody this before I wrote it and before I sang it- everybody has to do what they have to do. He did what he had to do; he bowl me the googalie so I bowl back a googalie,”he said. The calypso songwriter said he and Maynard are friends with no personal “beef”and the song was done “in good faith”. Isoursop said it was King Konris who had gone too far, by “joining the other team”, as the song advocates for a Unity government and for people to elect Sam Condor in Constituency 3, the seat the King is trying to capture. Isoursop will not be using the song during eliminations this weekend or for the December 15 th semifinals if he is selected. “One Song was only for the tents; it was never meant for competition. My first competition song is “My Pledge”and the second is “Obeah Man”. He said with One Song he simply brought the politics to the calypso bullring. “It’s nothing personal.”Addressing rumors that King Konris would feel compelled to enter the competition to “answer back”, Isoursop said he is prepared for anything. “He is not in my way. I’ve said it since the first time I sang the song- I saved the fourth verse for just in case,”he said. “And if anybody follows Soursop history they would know I’m a last verse bully.”Isoursop is confident he will be in the calypso finals. “Once I enter I’m an automatic finalist because when I bring the message, it’s well brought.”
