On the first Monday in the month of May every year Labour Day, also known as May Day, is celebrated. It usually starts out with a march organized by the Labour party through the streets of downtown Basseterre, and the rest of the day’s activities generally take place at the Patsy Allers Recreational Grounds, Trafalgar Village.
The Peoples’ Action Movement (PAM) also has Labour Day set aside for a day filled with entertainment at PAM Headquarters.
It is understood that Labour Day was celebrated originally in remembrance of the commitment of the working society to an entire country.
Today the ideology of Labour Day still seems to be confusing, for some persons consider it to be politically-affiliated while others see it as a day set aside to acknowledge the hard work of the working class.
What does Labour Day mean to you?
Lex, Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College – I think the holiday is just based on politics because there is the political party named Labour. I think it’s just to merely signify or promote Labour but they just want to look like they are giving the country a holiday.
Ible, Overseas national – Well Labour Day in the States is usually celebrated on the first Monday in September, but I’m not sure what Labour Day means down here. I think it means some sort of emancipation from the clutches of British rule. However, it’s specifically pertaining to political freedom. It’s not a socio-economical freedom. So, the Caribbean is still under the British rule financially. Labour Day just came about because of monetary greed.
Oral Nisbett, Self-employed – Labour Day should not a political day put aside to portray any type of party. It’s a day for the workers but I think the Caribbean governments over the years have changed it into a political affair. Some people call it May Day. On that day, workers of all classes in society could celebrate their rights, freedom and benefits. I think they should educate the people more rather than fooling them.
Rosetta Walwyn, Government headquarters – I think Labour Day is a happy day. It’s a day when workers are recognized for their contribution to the society.
Vantalyn Webbe, Basseterre High School – I think Labour Day is a holiday that recognizes the working community and appreciates their good work.
Jane, Citizen – Every Labour Day I go to march but really it’s a holiday dedicated for workers of our community.
