Five men hijacked a passenger bus — armed with cutlasses, broken bottles and stones — and allegedly killed one of the passengers, according to reports from the high court.
The incident happened in June of 2004.
The five young men — Kurt Mills, Kenneth Mills, Antwan Thompson, Leon Norford and Kemba Swanston — attacked a passenger bus on which Devon Henry and his brother Ras J of Waterworks, Cayon, were travelling.
According to past reports, the passenger bus had driven up in an area called Four Mile in Keys Village, to drop of a passenger.
When the bus came to a stop the five men allegedly pounced on the bus.
Other passengers were on the bus and managed to escape through windows and the door.
However, the two brothers opted to stay in the bus and tried to lock the windows and door, in an attempt to keep their attackers from entering the bus.
That did not work.
The five men got inside the bus and attacked the brothers.
One of the brothers, Devon, was able to escape through a window , even though he was badly wounded.
Police say the five young men slaughtered Ras J in the bus, who at that time was unarmed.
It is alleged that the five men repeatedly battered Ras J until he was dead using cutlasses, broken bottles and stones.
The Mills brothers and Thompson pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted murder.
The judge On Feb. 20 sentenced Kurt Mills and Thompson to life in prison and sentenced Kenneth Mills to 20 years in prison.
They also received concurrent sentences of ten years each for the indictment of attempted murder.
Norford was sentenced on March 7. On the charge of manslaughter he received a sentence of life imprisonment and a further sentence of 10 years on the charge of attempted murder.
Swanston, who opted to plea not guilty, will stand trial.
