(Charlestown, Nevis) ” Social Services is starting a chapter of a youth advocacy group called the Caribbean Healthy Lifestyle Project. They will be having a bonfire in front of Chevy’s Calypso Beach Bar on Pinney’s Beach tonight, Aug. 29, starting at 6 p.m. “This is a youth for youth initiative to promote healthy lifestyle choices,” said C-HLP Nevis Club Coordinator Alexis Lemmex. “We are doing this to keep the youth active and out of trouble. Some of the youth are already discussing some activities we might undertake once we get the club going. Some of them suggested things like a day to clean up the beaches, going hiking or having a road race.” C-HLP was established in 2000 to increase the involvement of Caribbean girls and women in physical activity and to promote the value of healthy lifestyle choices. In 2003, the program expanded and a multi-sport, co-ed workshop was held in Guyana. The workshop was successful and the C-HLP is now offered to male and female youths. The projects slogan, “Your Life, Your Health, Make it Right” emphasizes social and personal responsibility in making health lifestyle decisions. The project’s objectives are to promote healthy choices while promoting peer leadership and a sense of social responsibility and to create a forum for young people to voice their opinions and to raise awareness among youth to the benefits of physical activity and sports.
