A Sandy Point man reported to police that a masked man stole his gun while he walked along the main road Tuesday morning.

A source, referring to the man only as ‘Phipps’, told The Observer that according to the man’s statements, he was on his way to the mountain when the incident occurred.

“He said that he was making his way along the main road, just past the National Bank in Sandy Point when a guy with a black mask rushed by, stealing his shotgun off his person.”

Defense Force soldiers went on a hunt for the stolen weapon, which according to the source, was a licensed firearm.

Based on information gathered, the soldiers found the stolen weapon in the Figtree Village in an old mill, hidden under some old bedding material.

The source said that the gun was not returned to the owner, but instead was handed over to the police for fingerprinting and possibly ballistic testing. The source said that other persons may have been involved with the theft and may have handled the weapon during the time it was stolen and when it was recovered.

Police are also investigating another shooting that took place earlier this week, when officers of the Sandy Point Police District responded to a report of gunshots being fired in the Half Way Tree area.

“The informant reported that he was watering his cattle when a masked man approached him and shot at him. No one was injured during the incident and investigations are ongoing,” a police release stated.
