Details are sketchy surrounding an incident at the Marriott hotel that left a female employee battered and robbed of between US $1000 and $1600.
According to reports, the female employee left the door to her residential quarters slightly ajar so that her cat could re-enter. The woman fell asleep and awoke some time around 1:00 am to find a male intruder sitting in her apartment. After words were exchanged the man demanded that she open the closet safe. The woman denied knowing the combination which seemed to infuriate the man who then proceeded to beat on the frightened woman.
Trying to avoid being beaten to death, the woman opened the safe and after removing the cash, the man fled. The woman was taken to the hospital, treated and released.
Police were alerted and a search was launched for the man. The police were able to visually identify the suspect after security cameras had recorded the man’s earlier movements in other parts of the hotel. The robber had been wearing a tank-top prior to the assault which he changed after going to the laundry room and stealing a shirt. Another report had him being seen by a guest upon returning to their room earlier that evening. He had claimed to be a member of housekeeping but after the guest continued to question him, he wished the person a good evening and left.
An off duty defence force soldier spotted the suspect several days later at the Spanish bar west of the public market located on the Bay Road.
Pedro Carty, approximately 18 years old of Caunt Street, Newtown, was arrested last Friday and charged with various offences relating to the incident.
