MINI-OLYMPICS SET TO RUN

(Charlestown, Nevis) – The games are about to begin.

On Wednesday, April 9, the Nevis Amateur Athletic Association and the Department of Education will present the Gulf Insurance Primary Schools Championship.

These “Mini-Olympics,” sponsored by Gulf Insurance through their local agent, A.L. Evelyn Ltd., will begin at noon with opening ceremonies at Grove Park in downtown Charlestown.

The first athletic competition begins at 1 p.m.

All eight primary schools will compete for the Gulf Insurance Champions Trophy. Last year, the trophy winner was Charlestown Primary School.

Awards will be presented immediately after each event with class champions and most outstanding trophies presented at the end of the meet.

All schools will be battling for bragging rights including the Division “A” schools – Gingerland, Charlestown, Ivor Walters and St. Thomas’s, along with the Division “B” schools – St. James, Violet O. J, Nicholls, Maude Crosse Preparatory and St. John’s.  Athletes will also be competing for selection to the Leeward Islands Youth Championships to be held later this year.

Events for the meet will include the 60m, 100m, 200, 400m, 800m, 1500m and the exciting relays 4x100m and 4x400m. Competition will be held in 52 events, featuring over 325 athletes in seven classes, from Kindergarten to Grade Six.

Admission for the meet will be $10 for adult and $5 for children.

The general public is asked to note that special security, traffic, parking and vendor arrangements will be in place for the meet, including entry to Grove Park at the Island Main Road entrance only. Vendors are asked to note that absolutely no bottled drinks will be allowed into the grounds and that vendor tickets must be purchased prior to the event at the Department of Education. All vendors must be at the grounds by 10 a.m.
