The ruling Labour Party will hold a motorcade today through the streets of Basseterre to mark the start of the Labour Weekend activities, said Jason Hamilton, an executive member of the Labour Party.
“This motorcade is basically for the contestants of the Miss Labour Queen Show to be shown to the public,” Hamilton said.
The motorcade will start at the Pasty Allers Playing Field at 3:30 p.m. today. Hamilton pointed out that Labour pom-pom girls would be present in the motorcade.
Vincent Foe, chairperson of the queen show, said a lot of effort has been put into the show to ensure that it is the best ever in Labour’s history.
“This year the Labour Queen Show will be exciting and well packed with action,” Foe said.
He said Eight beautiful young ladies, representing all of the constituencies of St. Kitts, will be competing for the title. The show will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Carnival City, with Grand Masters providing the music.
Foe said the guest artist for the night will be Sugar Aloes from Trinidad.
“The masters of ceremony will be our very own calypsonian and comedian Black Bread and the energetic Birdman from Antigua,” Foe said.
“Investing in the Future with Labour” is the theme for this year’s pageant.
Foe said great care went into the selecting the best candidates for the show. The young ladies are Amirh Viera, constituency #1; Grace Percival, constituency #2; Alsanarda Kaadija Hanley, constituency #3; Sindy Nathan, constituency #4; Vanessa Lewis, constituency #5, Narissa Henry, constituency #6; Glentitia Stephens, constituency #7 and Cecilesha Charles, constituency #8.
Foe said the contestants will compete in four segments — Introduction Speech, Creative Wear, Performing Talent and the Evening Wear.
In the Introduction Speech segment, each contestant will be allowed to speak for two minutes, to outline their future with the Labour Party and the development of the country.
“Judges will be looking at the development of the country with projects like Porte Zante, hotels and other projects that are being done for the future,” Foe said.
For the Creative Wear segment, each contestant and their chaperon are responsible for making a creative wear from natural resources.
“Over the years contestants have used breadfruit leaves, plastic forks, plates and paper bags to make their wear,” Foe said.
Then, in the Talent segment each contestant has five minutes to perform. Foe said contestants can dance, act and sing, or even tell a story.
In the Evening Wear segment the young ladies have two minutes to model on stage an ankle floor length gown.
“From the interaction with the girls it seems as thou the show will be very exciting,” Foe said. “This year we will have two local performers — the NG Steppers and the Junior Calypso king, Mighty Junior.”
On Sunday the Labour Party will hold a Fun &Sports Day at the Pond’s Pasture starting at 10:00 a.m. According to Hamilton, on that day workers from the Industrial Site will compete in cricket, netball, dominoes and other sports.
At 8:00 p.m. that day a public meeting will be held at Central and Market streets.
On Monday, the Labour Party will hold their annual Labour Day March starting at the Patsy Allers Playing field at 10:00 a.m.
“The march gives the workers of the country a day that workers could come together and show their solidarity,” Hamilton said.
The workers march is schedule to start at 10:30 a.m.
The Grand Masters and the Express band will provide entertainment.
“It will be a pleasure for me to see the workers come out in their large numbers to support the march,” Hamilton said.
