Nevis is the host country for the 38th Leeward Islands Debating Competition (LIDC), presented By Nevis Sixth Form College. On the morning of Thursday, 25th February a press conference of the Local Organizing Committee was held at the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union (NCCU) Conference Room. Representatives from some of the event’s major sponsors were there to make their presentations to the Nevis Literary & Debating Society (NLDS). Participating sponsors included RBTT, LIME and Delta Petroleum. There were also presentations made By LIME to a representative of each participating island – Anguilla, Antigua, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Nevis, and defending champion St. Kitts. Earlier, each representative had given a short speech to the press conference attendees. President of NLDS, Ms. Earline Pemberton, shared her remarks. “All teams wish to put out their best efforts in this competition,” she said. Ms. Shavane Joseph, Communications Officer for the NLDS, told The Observer that the competition was progressing smoothly. She further pointed out that all of the teams were present and passionately anticipating a keenly contested competition. All of the teams expressed satisfaction with their level of preparation, and were confident in being declared the winner of LIDC. The series of debates will commence tonight at The Occasions, located on the Bypass Road, in Charlestown. Antigua will face Nevis on Friday, the 26th, at 7:30 p.m. The final debate will take place on Sunday, 28th February.
