The top five Nevis winners have been selected for the National Geographic Traveler Magazine annual youth photo contest. The Nevis Ministry of Tourism announced the first round of judging has been completed. The contest is now in its third year. This year’s theme is “In My View.”
The top five winning entries for Nevis are Ms. Michelle McGrath of the Charlestown Secondary School Sixth Form College with three winning photos entitled
“Resting Hulk,” “Elegant Pelican” and “1, 2, 3, Jump;” Mr. Dylon Grant of the Gingerland Secondary School with his photo entitled “Studio on the Hill;” and Mr. Nick Dias of the Special Education Unit with his photo entitled “The Rainbow.”
The contest invited Caribbean students ages 12-17 residing in all the Caribbean Tourism Organization member countries to submit photos that they believe capture the best attributes of their country.
“The images were to represent a variety of elements in Caribbean culture ‘the people, food, landscapes or local events that best describes the spirit of the community,’” Ms. Nicole Liburd of the Tourism Ministry said.
The contest is judged in two rounds, a local on island judging where the top five local entries are chosen.
These top five entries are then sent to the National Geographic Traveler magazine for the second round of judging.
The overall Caribbean winner will be announced on or around February 15, 2008.
A total of 20 entries were submitted, five pictures each by the following students: Mr. Dilon Warner – Charlestown Secondary School; Ms. Michelle McGrath – Charlestown Secondary Sixth Form College; Mr. Dylon Grant – Gingerland Secondary School and Mr. Nick Dias– Special Education Unit.
“This annual photography initiative is a very important undertaking for the National Geographic Traveler Magazine as they view this as ‘a wonderful opportunity to involve the local communities by showcasing the unique view that a resident student
has of their culture and its authentic beauty,’” Ms. Liburd said.
There are three prizes to be won by the three top overall students.
