Nevis Electricity Company Ltd. (NEVLEC) has made it easier for its customers to use the company’s services and pay bills by going on-line.

The power company hired a web developer based in St. Kitts to create a multipurpose website, www.nevlec.com, that was officially launched with a news conference at the firm’s site in Pinneys Monday, June 4, a company spokesman said.

Tresia Daniel, customer service manager and public relations officer, described the website as ‘the beginning of a new era in NEVLEC history.

It will make llife easier for our customers, increase convenience and increase customer awareness in payment of bills, energy saving and safety tips.’

Attending the conference was Hon. Carlisle Powell, Junior Minister for Public Works. He called the website opening a ‘pleasurable’ moment and said NIA is proud of the move into the future.

Powell said the new development will let citizens learn how to read and input their power uses from the comfort of their own homes. He also said the website would make life easier for NEVLEC employees who are asked to respond to the questions of customers.

‘Families living overseas can have no doubt about their meter reading since they can check the bill themselves,’ he added. ‘This will be a great step forward as they can pay their bills with a credit card.’

He urged other utilities within the government, like the water department, to follow the electrical company’s lead and set up their own websites.

Permanent Secretary Ernie Stapleton is chairman of the NEVLEC board.

While NEVLEC operates as a monopoly in Nevis, it is responsible for providing quality services to its customers. And this includes being able to communicate effectively with the public on any issues concerning energy and electricity, he said.

NEVLEC General Manager Cartright Farrell said the website has been a part of management’s plan for several years.

‘When the computer infrastructure was installed four years ago, it was with the view that at some point we would serve customers through a website,’ he said.

An added plus to the website is that it will extend the company’s services on a 24-hour basis. Questions that would need to be asked in the office during working hours can now be asked and answered on-line.

Farrell urged customers to use the information provided to their benefit and to keep NEVLEC informed on their thoughts about services, billing and any other pertinent topics.

As for paying bills online, Farrell said the final details are being worked out with the bank.
