The People’s Action Movement (PAM), one of the main opposition parties in the Federation, marked another anniversary on January 19, celebrating more than six decades of political engagement and national service.

Founded 61 years ago, PAM has long positioned itself as a movement rooted in courage, conviction, and people-centred governance. Party officials and supporters reflected on the organisation’s origins, noting that it emerged during a period of political resistance, and was shaped by a firm belief that the interests of ordinary Kittitians and Nevisians must always take precedence over privilege.

Throughout its history, PAM has played a central role in guiding the Federation through periods of challenge and transition. That journey reached a defining milestone on September 19, 1983, when St. Kitts and Nevis attained Independence under the leadership of the Right Excellent Sir Kennedy Simmonds. Party representatives have often described that moment as more than symbolic, highlighting it as the transfer of political authority into the hands of the people, underpinned by constitutional governance and strengthened by self-government for Nevis.

The party’s legacy is also reflected in major national developments implemented during its time in government. Between 1980 and 1995, PAM oversaw several transformative projects, including the development of Port Zante, the establishment of the College of Further Education, and the construction of the South East Peninsula Road. These initiatives, alongside social programmes such as the school meals programme, skills training, and youth development initiatives, were credited with expanding access to education, supporting families, and creating wider economic opportunities.

PAM has also been recognised for helping to expand opportunities for women in national leadership, setting precedents that contributed to a more inclusive political landscape.

As the party commemorated its 61st year, tributes were paid to its founders, past leaders, and grassroots supporters, whose contributions were described as instrumental in securing democratic stability and advancing social development within the Federation.

Looking ahead, party officials acknowledged that the work of national development remains ongoing. With an emphasis on continuity and renewal, PAM signalled its intention to prepare the next generation of leadership while remaining guided by its historical principles and commitment to the will of the people.

The anniversary was observed as a milestone in the party’s history, marking 61 years of political resolve, public service, and engagement in the democratic life of St. Kitts and Nevis.
