(St. Kitts-Nevis) – The Royal St. Kitts-Nevis Police this week issued a warning about dog fighting that covered what constituted the offense and the penalties faced by those convicted of it.
The statement was issued days after questions about law enforcement efforts to stop the practice were raised by the Nevis Humane Society.
The police warning states: “It has been brought to the attention of the Police that persons are engaged in the practice of fighting dogs. These fights usually end with the animals being severely injured and sometimes killed in the process. The general public is therefore advised that this practice is not only cruel to the animals but is also illegal.
Section 31 (1) © of the Dog (Licensing and Control) Act No. 10 of 2007, prohibits the keeping, using or allowing to be kept for use, any dog for the purpose of fighting. Any person engaged in this activity commits an offence and on summary conviction is liable for fine of Five Thousand dollars ($5,000.00) or imprisonment for two years or both.”
