Political signs at risk in Nevis

Hours after the leaders of both parties vying for seats in the Nevis Island Assembly agreed to respect the political signs and activities of their opposition, Divisional Commander Joseph Liburd of the Nevis Police Division issued a strong warning against vandalizing or defacing political signs and posters.

The Rev. Alson B.H. Percival brokered the meeting Thursday between Vance Amory, leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement and Joseph Parry, leader of the Nevis Reformation Party. Both candidates signed a statement that read, in part: “…the leaders of the two political parties on Nevis met at the initiation of Rev. Canon Dr. Alson B.H. Percival and declared their serious objection to any disruptive behavior at political meetings. They further declared their dissatisfaction with the destruction of posters, billboards and other political paraphernalia.”

But later that same day, Commander Liburd sent out a stiff waning regarding the defacing of signs.

He told The Observer that he had gotten complaints from both parties, which prompted his warning.

“The police wish to warn all persons to discontinue the interference of all political posters,” read a press release from Commander Liburd’s office. “Once the police receive any evidence of this criminal act, legal actions will be taken.”

Liburd said police will be out in force over the weekend to attempt to prevent any more destruction of political signs.
