BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -– When Poverty Alleviation Programme recipients begin to receive their $500 monthly stipend in December, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris has advised them to spend their funds wisely.
“We are asking those who are going to benefit from it [the programme], to use it wisely,” Dr. Harris said on the ZIZ radio show “Frank and Candid.” Do not squander it. We are providing them support, which is a good thing, and we hope that they use it well. The $500.00 monthly stipend should substantially help these households to keep up to date with their bills.
He said the money should be used toward fixed expenses, such as electricity, water and mortgages, and not be squandered on frivolous things.
“We want to help people help themselves, but when we help you, do not abuse it,” he added.
Prime Minister Harris said that he is pleased to see the Poverty Alleviation Programme, which was listed in his Team Unity Administration’s Manifesto as an area of priority, come on stream next month. The Prime Minister added that he looks forward to it bringing financial relief to many families in the Federation.
“What we have attempted to do is what nobody in the world expected a small country like St. Kitts and Nevis would lead in doing. We are giving a major ‘top-up’ of $500.00 a month to every family whose [monthly] household income is under $3000.00. This is significant,” Dr. Harris concluded.
