(St. Kits) – On the Christian calendar, Easter is a symbol of new life and regeneration marked by the act of divine giving. The days of Lent which lead to Easter are often spent in solemn reflection and benevolence.
The Rotary Club of St. Kitts, in following its mantra of “Service Above Self”, distributed care packages to the elderly and needy in the communities of St. Paul, Newton Ground, Dieppe Bay and Parson’s Ground on Saturday, March 8.
Club President Leah Sahely saluted the elderly and what they have given to the development of the country while expressing the joys that giving bestows upon the club and its members. Sahely presented the packages to a number of recipients which included former sugar workers in an area once known as the sugar belt.
The distribution drive was conducted with the kind assistance of C&C Super Foods Ltd., who sponsored the groceries and the Ministry of Community Development.
Marketing Manager of C&C Super Foods, Larry Vaughan acknowledged the outreach programme of the Rotary Club and the chance it offered for his company’s involvement. “C&C Super Foods is always grateful for the opportunity to give to the elderly and the needy. The Rotary care package distribution drive has always been a dynamic means of giving back to a community that has made C&C Super Foods a household name. Today C&C means Care and Contribute.”
Social Assistance Supervisor in the Ministry of Social Development and Parson’s Ground resident, Ann Wigley applauded the tripartite efforts of a social organization, private sector and government to give to the elderly and needy in the federation. “On behalf of the government I want to thank the Rotary Club of St. Kitts and C&C Super Foods for distributing these care packages to the elderly and less fortunate today.”
Wigley also said that Rotary care package drive was now a part of her ministry’s annual events and she commended the organization for having kept the traditions of giving and caring over the years.
The project is part of the club’s annual drive which takes members into the different communities, island wide. Care packages are distributed three times annually – at Easter, Independence and Christmas.
