Press Release(EMU) – St. Kitts, September 6, 2016:
A key objective of the Ministry of Education’s “Education for All, Embrace Change, Secure the Future” theme, challenges administrators to channel financial assistance to those who can benefit most.
In his speech to the Nation on the resumption of the 2016-2017 school year on Monday September 5, Minister of Education Hon Shawn Richards unveiled his Government’s SAFE scholarship programme which restructured the REACH programme with a view to ensuring that the relevant students would get priority as well as to be held to a standard of accountability that would encourage them to strive for success.
According to Minister Richards, “the Ministry of education has re-branded the REACH programme to meet the needs of our students who need it most. The REACH Programme has been renamed the SAFE Programme. The acronym SAFE stands for Support for the Advancement of Further Education.”
The newly restructured programme has added terms and conditions which must be signed by applicants to safeguard the effectiveness of the programme. The following are included:
An allowance of $1000 will be paid at the end of the academic year to students of CFBC and Nevis Sixth Form College who attained a passing grade in any two of the following subjects: French, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Pure or Applied Mathematics.
Scholarship recipients are required to perform at least four hours of volunteer service per month and maintain high academic standards.
Any student who is absent from any examination without a valid and verifiable reason will be required to pay for the subject. Measures will be in place to ensure the repayment of outstanding fees.
The Scholarships will be awarded to citizens of St Kitts and Nevis who are enrolled at the CFBC, Nevis Sixth Form College, AVEC or UWI Level One.
The Scholarship covers registration fees, books and examination fees which will be paid directly to the institutions.
Most importantly only those students who qualify as being in the social bracket: indigent, vulnerable or poor will be awarded scholarships.
The application forms will be available at CFBC, SELF UNIT, and Ministry of Education on Church Street by Thursday September 8 and are to be returned to the SELF UNIT by September 20, 2016. THE CFBC will be accepting completed forms on behalf of SELF.
