A Sandy Point man said to be in his early to mid twenties was shot by law enforcement early Thursday morning as he attempted to evade police.

‘Arctic’ Guillard was one of two suspects in a string of gunpoint robberies that started Wednesday morning after 4 a.m. when they allegedly stole a vehicle from a residence in Greenlands.

According to a police source, two men broke into the home of a reserve soldier and stole two sets of car keys, cell phones, a dvd player and a camouflage outfit. From there the men reportedly drove to Dieppe Bay and robbed the Sunrise Bakery at gunpoint around 6 a.m. and made off with an undisclosed sum of cash.

The source indicated that the same car was the reported getaway vehicle in a gun-point robbery at Calypso Bay residence Wednesday night.

The stolen car was reportedly seen around the Basseterre area and police and Defense Force soldiers staked out the Gardens Housing area where the car was parked that night.

The source told The Observer that as the two suspects approached the vehicle, keys in hand, they were ordered to halt as police identified themselves.

It was reported that the two men opened fire and tried to run off through an alley. The security forces returned fire and Guillard was shot in the leg while the other suspect managed to escape. The wounded man was taken to the hospital and will no doubt be charged in relation to the robberies. A number of 9mm ammunition was discovered in the stolen vehicle but the gun the suspect allegedly used was not recovered. Police are now searching for the second suspect who escaped.

Police also have an AK47 assault rifle in their possession after it was found next to the premises of a home they were searching in the New Pond Site area earlier this week. Seventy-five 7.62 mm rounds were also recovered at the same scene. The suspect was not charged for possession of the deadly weapon and ammunition but was taken into custody for questioning.
