(New River, Nevis) ” Approximately 2,000 race fans attended the second day of races at the St. James Drag Strip on Saturday, Oct. 25. As opposed to the last race where there were competitors from several of the surrounding islands, this race day belonged to the locals, according to Nevis Drag Racing Association President Vaughn Anslyn. “Almost everyone here is from Nevis,” he said. “There are some from St. Kitts, but not many.” Anslyn said he was surprised at the turnout. Attendance at the Independence Day race was estimated at 6,000. “We knew we wouldn’t have the turnout we had on our inaugural event, but this is still a big crowd,” he said. “I think this shows that the people like this and it wouldn’t matter what day we have races, people are going to show up.” Two by two cars and bikes lined up against each other to test man and machine at who could go one-quarter of a mile in the least amount of time. Vendors did a good bit of business until the races ended at dark. The next event is to be a three day event planned for the weekend of Nov. 28, 29 and 30. Mr. Anslyn is planning on auto and motorcycle racers from St. Maarten, Antigua and Statia to come to Nevis for the event. “If everything goes as planned, the races at the end of November should be big,” he said. “There will be a lot more cars and maybe a full day of bikes.”
