(Federation of St. Kitts-Nevis) – Officials are urging Federation citizens to get new and improved driver’s licenses that are not only more secure and meet international standards, but can be issued in minutes.

The first license on St. Kitts was issued to Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas on Feb. 29. On March 3, Nevis Island Authority Premier the Hon. Joseph Parry received his new driver’s license.

“I would like to encourage all Nevisians to get the new card. It is my understanding that it is time saving, it is only a matter of minutes and you get your card the same time rather than the next day. I also understand that it has some enhanced security features which would be of benefit to all the citizens who use it,” Mr. Parry said, according to an NIA press release.

“So I have started it and I am encouraging everybody else to follow, to come in and have the changes made. It is only a matter of time and in five minutes it can be done. So please come and make the change as we seek to reach international standards in all that we do in the country,” he said.

According to a release from the Royal St. Kitts-Nevis Police force describing the new licenses –

Design improvements include:

i. Statement at the bottom of the card indicating that the card must be returned to the nearest Police Station if found.

ii. Signature of the Licensing Officer at the back, rather than at the front.

iii. Increased font size of text, making it easier to read

iv. Improved background, (a light blue background with a pictorial view of St. Kitts-Nevis with the National Flag prominently displayed.)

Security Enhancements include:

i. Physiological Data Capturing:- Digital photo and digital signature.

ii. Over-laminate:- a special security overlay to prevent tampering and alterations.

iii. Digital imaging technology: license holder image remains on file for future comparisons to prevent identity theft.

iv. Bar Code: the license is fitted with a bar code on the back as a security element.

The new card will continue to be valid for three years, and there is no increase in the cost, which is currently $187.50. Persons with valid driver’s licenses who wish to apply for the improved license may do so, but will be required to pay the current cost of a duplicate driver’s license, which is $75.00.

The new license will be available from the Inland Revenue Department in Basseterre and Charlestown during normal working hours.
