SHOULD NEVIS PREPARE FOR DISASTER? MOST ASSUREDLY, YES Dear Editor, When God gave Noah the message for the people of his time warning them about the flood that He would send on the earth, their response was laughter and hooting. Even, and I quote one lady, ” the phenomena of unshephered animals entering the ark”raised no alarm in the hearts of the sin hardened people. As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the end, says the Bible. So many persons are having dreams of tidal waves (tsunamis”) that it is impossible for us not to realize that God is warning the people of Nevis. Nevisians have turned away from God and gone after wealth and prestige, not realizing that if we die without God, wealth and prestige would be of no use to us. Let’s take a candid look at some of the things that are taking place in Nevis: 1. The merging of Church and State. We attend our churches for service and Ministers of Government are prominently displayed on God’s holy place. That should never be. Their rightful place is in the congregation amongst the congregants. 2. Our Ministers of Religion have openly declared their political allegiance. How could a church be in unity when the pastor has by his/her very action divided the church. Any one guilty of the above should be asked by the members to step down. 3. Our political leaders have sown awful seeds of discord amongst brother and sister; amongst father and son and amongst mother and daughter. How can a country be united in the face of such open hostility between fellow countrymen? 4. Our children make statements such as “God is out of style”because they have not been taught to respect the same God who gives them breath and possesses the power to take that breath away from them in an istant. 5. People have become so dishonest that to quote the prophet Jeremiah, “I am astonished.”6. And what is the result of us turning away from God? I use the Bible’s phrase, “Strangers have come in amongst us and are eating our substance”and we are helpless to prevent it. “If a people that are called by name will humble themselves and pray …………. And turn from their wicked ways I will hear from heaven and answer ….pardon their iniquities and heal their lands”People of Nevis, if we do not turn back to God and reinstate Him in our affections we will hold our heads and wail as did the children of Israel when they found themselves “captives in Babylon”.
