Sir Simeon Daniel Posthumously Awarded A National Hero Pauline Ngunjiri Nevis’ first Premier, the late Rt. Hon. Sir Dr Simeon Daniel was bestowed posthumously the Order of National Hero Award on Tuesday during an Investiture Ceremony hosted by the St. Kitts and Nevis Acting Governor General, Tapley Seaton (Q.C) and attended by among others the Prime Minister, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Timothy Harris and family members. The award was accepted by his wife, Sheila Daniel. Contacted by the Observer on Tuesday , she said, “The award was well deserved.” Dr. Daniel was born on Aug. 22, 1934 and died on May 22 , 2012. In September 2013 on National Heroes Day, the then Governor General, Edmund Lawrence announced that the late Dr. Simeon Daniel was being commended as a National Hero. He acted on the advice of the then Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas. Other leaders in the Federation who have been bestowed with the honor are Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Paul Southwell and Joseph N. France. According to Dr. Daniel’s published profiles and official documents, he became the first Premier of Nevis in 19 September 1983 . During his tenure as Premier and leader of the Nevis Reformation Party he was instrumental in improving the basic quality of life services for Nevisians; reliable electricity, water and improved roads. The Government run pre-schools were opened in Nevis for the first time; the Nevis Sixth Form College was established and a multipurpose center was set up for the welfare of educating the masses. Land ownership became a reality for Nevisians, when under Sir Simeon the Land Reform Program was set up and it became the first such program in the OECS. The Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation gave land ownership to ordinary Nevisians at $3,000 per half acre and $6,000 per acre. In addition, domains for residences were newly established in Ramsbury, Cades Bay, Hamilton, Prospect and other areas around Nevis. A new thrust was seen in Tourism; when under his leadership he attracted the Four Seasons Resort to Nevis, bringing much needed employment to its residents. A visionary leader, he was a driving force in the establishment of the Nevis Financial Sector. Sir Daniel was instrumental in laying the foundation for the development that was essential for moving Nevis forward.
