The Social Security Board presented cash awards to the winners of the High School Essay Competition in a ceremony at the Social Security Board room on Tuesday 23rd February. Jael Gumbs and Candice Greene of the Washington Archibald High School; and Guevelle Pemberton of the Basseterre High School, were given their accolades and prize monies for achieving first, third and second places, respectively. The schools also received cash awards for the efforts of their students. Members of the Social Security Board Ms. Eslyn Swanston, Mrs. Carleen Pemberton and Ms. Sandra Daveron were joined By Director of Social Security Mrs. Sephlin Lawrence and Deputy Director Mr. Steve Wrensford in presenting the awards. The students, their schools and their parents were lauded By Mrs. Lawrence who noted that the students are in a better position to be ambassadors for Social Security. Assistant Director of Research Statistics and Public Relations Mr. Elvin Bailey gave an overview of the competition and guided the morning’s proceedings. This is the second presentation exercise taking place in relation to the Essay Competition series which was held late last year. The Primary Schools segment was dealt with approximately two weeks ago when three students on the island of Nevis were awarded with the top honours. The Tertiary segment was not conclusive as it was determined that there was an inadequate response from students in that category. The presentation was witnessed By parents and teachers of the winners, a representative of the media, and senior management personnel of the Social Security Board.
