1st April 2010 CRICKET President appeals to past Cricketers Nevis’ Cricket chief, Ronald Powell is appealing to all Cricketers who have represented Nevis in the past to kindly be present at the Elquemedo Willet Park on Saturday 3rd April in order to be a part of the 2nd annual Cricket Coaching Festival. According to Powell, letters were sent out to as many past players as possible but some may have been overlooked. He is therefore asking past players to note that even if they did not receive a letter, they are all invited and will be accorded the dignitary status they deserve. The Coaching clinics will commence at about 10.00 am but Powell has also informed that everyone needs to be at the Park By 9.15 am as a brief opening ceremony will be held at 9.30 am which will include the Minister of Sports, Hon Hensley Daniel and a few of the past players. A new feature of this year’s clinic will be a time set aside when the younger players present will be formally introduced to the past players and told of some of their achievements. Past players from St.Kitts of the caliber of Victor Eddy, Virgil Newton and Noel Guishard, have also accepted invitations to be present at the clinic. The event is expected to be an all day affair and lunch will be provided for the participants. English teams set to visit Nevis According to chief Coordinator and National Coach, Stuart Williams, a few youthful English teams are set to play a series of matches on Nevis over the Easter weekend. The three teams comprising of youngsters under 13, under 17 and under 18 respectively, will engage Nevisian teams of the same age range. The matches will all be played at the Ramsbury grounds-the unofficial Meritzer Williams Park, starting at 10 am on Good Friday-April 2nd; Easter Monday-April 5th and Tuesday April 6th. Williams further indicated that the Nevisian young cricketers, who practiced up until late yesterday afternoon, should all give a good account of themselves but he expects the matches to be very competitive as the young Englishmen are also well coached. The man who has been designated By his peers as the unofficial ‘President for life’, was happy to note that this year would be historic in the sense that it would be the first time that the general Public would be able to enjoy the newly flattened ‘Flats’ for an activity of this nature. He indicated that registration for the event would commence at about 9am and the judging of the kites is set to commence at about 11 am. The actual kite flying contest will commence at about 12.00 noon. There will also be a range of activities which will include Cricket and a set of fun games. The registration fee is a mere $5.00 but the winners will receive the usual healthy prizes: $300.00 for the winners and $150.00 for the second placers in all categories except for the book leaf category where the winner will receive $50.00 and the second placer will receive $25.00. These prizes are compliments of the usual sponsors of the event, the Four Seasons Estates. Vendors will pay a registration fee of $75.00-down from $100.00 in previous years. According to Nevis’ Cricket chief, Ronald Powell, the activity will bowl off at 10.30 am and will run for the major part of the day. As was the case last year, all cricket teams and clubs on the island have been invited to send at least five players for each of the following disciplines: Batting, pace bowling, off spin, leg spin and wicketkeeping. Many of the former outstanding cricketers for Nevis have again been invited to help in guiding the younger players along their cricketing path. Digicel second division Semi Finals set Now that all of the preliminary rounds of the Digicel second division league hosted By the Nevis cricket Association have been completed, the names of the top four teams and the schedule for the semi final encounters have been released. Dillon gives back to his School Ailing youthful Nevisian cricketer, Dillon Claxton made a surprise visit to his school, the Gingerland Secondary School on Monday 29th March. The purpose of his visit was to hand over a set of balls for use at his beloved school. Apparently the balls which include Footballs and basketballs had been donated to him and as he is presently ill he decided to donate
them to his school. Teacher responsible for Sports at the School, Mr. Oliver Beazer accepted the gifts on behalf of the school and expressed his profound gratitude for the gesture. Principal of the school, Mrs. Dawn Jeffers was elated, mainly to be able to see Dillon and also thanked him for his fine gesture. The children on hand at the assembly session that morning gave a warm round of applause to their ailing school mate. The Parish Priest attached to the school, Rev Rosemarie Julius also prayed for God’s healing mercies on behalf of the young cricketer. The next deciding match will be played on Thursday 1st April when CCC bath united takes on current champions SL Horsfords Highlights Int. 30th March 2010 CRICKET New Inter High School Champions Crowned The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CRBC) crciket team is the new champions of Inter High school cricket within the federation of St.Kitts-Nevis. This feat was accomplished yesterday at the Cotton Ground playing field when they defeated the Gingerland Secondary School By 81 runs. The GSS team won the toss and sent the CFBC team into bat. At one point the CFBC team was on 106 for 6 and then 116 for 9 and seemingly struggling. However a crucial last wicket partnership of 70 runs between Jeffers and Henry proved the main difference between the two teams. CFBC eventually all out for 186 in 36.5 overs of the 40 overs encounter. GSS in their turn at crease failed to develop any long standing partnerships and were bowled out for 105 in just 23.4 overs. However, Yousuf appears to have kept a window open for return to the international arena, for he repeatedly said the decision to retire was “for now.” “This is my retirement. I have retired from international cricket,” Yousuf told reporters in Karachi. “I received a letter from the PCB that my staying in the team is harmful for the team, so I announce my retirement from international cricket.” However, when asked if the decision was final, Yousuf said: “For now, this is what I can see, that my playing for Pakistan is damaging. For now, this is it, for now this is my retirement. “I thank the fans around the world, all the senior players and family members for supporting me throughout my 12-year career. I always played for my country and if my playing is harmful for the team then I don’t want to play,” he said. Yousuf had, last week, said he was preparing to retire and that he would make a formal announcement today. It was even stated that the Charlestown team had won By four points. This naturally created quite some concern among sporting pundits on the island and even more so for the folks affiliated with the Joycelyn Liburd Primary School who had been crowned 2010 champs since the same day of the Championships which was held on Wednesday March 24th. The general consensus of opinion was that if that was the case, it would spell an immediate death for the prestigious event as not only the Joycelyn Liburd Primary but some of the other schools would refuse to participate in future events, citing a lack of confidence in the organizers. Principal Education Officer, Mrs. Lornette Connor was approached on the issue and she confidently stated that the rumours were indeed false and that the original results which were announced on the evening of the event, still stand. This was further confirmed By Chief Organizer of the event and NAAA chief, Lester Blackett who indicated that “a recount was not requested; a recount was not done and the original results still stand’. He noted that as is the norm, the usual review of the meet was conducted and there had been no changes in the point standings. According to the original results released on the night of the event, the Joycelyn Liburd Primary School just edged out the five peat champions Charlestown Primary By a mere two points to take the coveted overall trophy. On the other hand, an elated St.John’s school secured the trophy for the B division. SCHOOLS CELEBRATE WITH MOTORCADES The Joycelyn Liburd Primary school and the St.John’s Primary school, both celebrated their victories at the recently concluded Inter Primary Sports meet, on Saturday, with separate motorcades which eventually crossed paths to make one. The St.John’s School led By Coach Adelvin Phillip, commenced their motorcade at their school grounds and journeyed towards Gingerland. Incidentally, The Joycelyn Liburd School was already in total readiness for their grand motorcade and both schools eventually linked up to make one grand. Their motorcade was led By the jubilant Coach, Kurvin Wallace. The horn tooting, balloon waving bunch of happy motorists headed East through Zion village en route to making a complete circle through the length and breadth of Nevis. They even passed through Craddock Road and as was expected did not receive the warmest of welcomes By the Charlestown Primary supporters there. They slowed down on Main Street Charlestown, where they would have received their biggest audience and relished in the joy of their victory. The motorcade culminated back at the Gingerland School and even as the celebrants parted ways there was a sense of accomplishment that money could not pay for. Record participation in Cross Channel Swim Chief organizer, Winston Crooke indicted that if he had registered only 58 persons he would have felt pleased with the participation level at the 8th annual Nevis to St.Kitts cross channel swim. He was overwhelmed with the fact that no fewer than 98 persons actually registered and 97 completed the 2 ½ miles co
urse. The event was held on Sunday 28th March and commenced as per usual at the Oualie Beach hotel. After a briefing By Winston Crooke, the swimmers all lined up on the beach and at the sound of the shrilly whistle, ran into the water and took off. In a pre race interview, most of the athletes indicated that they were completing the course more for a sense of achievement than an actual race. However, as expected the actual racers were the ones completing the course early. Some of the swimmers explained that they would have heard of the event through various means: through friends, via the internet and from past swimmers. The swimmers included a nine- year old boy from Antigua who had completed the course last year as well and a few ladies who were past age sixty. He emphasized his government’s commitment to sports in general and the stated commitment to youth development. He urged the players to develop strong friendships and to play hard but fair. He also indicated his disgust at the use of indecent language at such games and requested of the players to move to a different level in their general decorum. CRICKET St.Kitts and Nevis in Inter High Schools Finals The Cotton Ground Recreation Grounds will be the venue today for the grand finals of the Inter high school league for teams from St.kitts and Nevis. In the semi final encounters slated for Friday 26th March, GSS won over Sandy Point By default. However, CSS was unable to hold off a competitive CFBC team and thus failed to qualify for the finals. Scores in that game: CSS 177 all out in 29 overs: Alex Williams 42; O. Webbe 34; Chavil Archibald 16 and Clydre Smithen 16 not out. For the CFBC team: Lakim Phipps 3 for 36; K. Jeffers 2 for 52 and J. Phillip 2 for 21. CFBC 178 for 2 in 31 overs: Akim Fox 61 and John Phillip 52 not out. Ray Sharamber 1 for 31 and Clydre Smithen 1 for 16. The CFBC team won By 8 wickets. Today’s final is set to commence at 10.am. Update on Digicel Second division league Several matches were played in the Digicel second division league over the weekend. Pennyless All Stars crushed GSS. ALL stars 236 for 5 in 25 overs-Fabian Cranston 69; Donovan Matthews 46, Wasim Mntos 34 and Merlin Liburd 20 not out. Shavare Liburd 2 for 23. Rondell Chapman, Corey Morton and Trevin Nisbett al got 1 wicket each. The match between Jessups and Highlights was rained out. FOOTBALL Final Four off and running Two exciting games were played in front of a small crowd on the evening of Saturday 27th March, as a part of the final four count down in the local football league hosted By the Nevis football Association. In match one, SL Horsfords Highlights and Brand Slybo Stoney Grove, ended regular time in a hard fought drawn situation on 3 goals all. The Highlights men apparently thought it was all over and proceeded to leave the Park. They were then informed that in previous meetings with the Association, it was apparently stated that all games would have to end in a clear cut result. This created some friction and a tense situation followed as Ras Iroy had to utilize his negotiating skills to get his team back onto the field of play. The Highlights team however, secured another goal and ended the game at overtime with a 4 to 3 victory. In the second game a fleet- footed and aggressive Combined Schools team, seemed to have caught the Bath United team flat footed for most of the first half and secured an early lead. However, with about a minute left for the half time whistle, a jubilant Bath team equalized. The second half was also hard fought with the Referee being forced to intervene with several altercations and issuing a few yellow cards in the process. With just about five minutes remaining on the clock, Shaheed Tyson for the Bath team, made a stunning finish out of a bungle of players to seal the issue on 2 goals to 1. On Sunday 28th it was the turn of the Combined Schools to engage the former champions SL Horsfords Highlights in game one. Again the school team was very positive and aggressive and at the end of regular time, the score was nil all. It was nil-all all at the end of overtime. The players then went to the penalty spot and the Combined schoolboys proved more accurate, sealing the issue on 5 goals to 3. The goal scorers for the School team were: Clinton Staurt, Davidson Jarvis, Arthur Boston, Leondre Powell, Jurnel Turner and for Highlights: Lionel Marson (2) and Delaney Phillip. In the final game, BA SG Strikers took advantage of a lack luster start By the Bath United team to be leading at one point with a 2 to nil advantage. However, Bath came back strongly and managed to tie the scores at 2 to all at the end of regular time. However an early goal By the Stoney Grove team in overtime sealed the issue as they managed to hold on to their lead, when the final whistle was blown Final score: 3 goals to 2 in favour of Stoney Grove. The goal scorers for Stoney Grove were: Delvon Clarke (2) and Delroy Arthurton. For the Bath team, the goal scorers were: Kevin Charles, Dale Farrell.
