SPORTS Reggie Douglas Is Nevis’ 2009 Sportsman of the Year Reggie Douglas was once again recognised as Nevis’ 2009 Sportsman of the Year, after first copping the title in 2008. Known better for his triathlon prowess, Reggie decided to concentrate his efforts on cycling in 2009 targeting the OECS Cycling Championships as the event to launch himself at the region’s best cyclist. After holding on to his crown as OECS Triathlon Champion for the fourth time at the Nevis Triathlon, Reggie then claimed a first in the Grenada Tri and second in the Tobago Tri. After that he focused on cycle racing. Whilst in St Maarten over the summer he did more than 20 races for the team Mo Trouble, gaining valuable experience and mileage as he prepared for the OECS Championships. In June Reggie competed in and won the SKN National Time Trial (TT) and Road Race (RR) Championships held on Nevis alongside female TT and RR Champion Kathryn Bertine. SKN had its new national champions. The OECS Cycling Championships was being held in St Lucia and Reggie went with a full team to help him achieve his aim to take the top spot, but after a very brave fight he was beaten to the line and had to settle for third place, but it was the highest position even attained By a team from SKN. His year was By no means done as he then went on to represent the federation at the Cycling World Championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland, together with team mates James Weekes, Monica Ceccon and Kathryn Bertine. This was Reggie’s first trip to Europe and it was a most successful first visit, winning over the local fans and becoming the darlings of the tournament. Reggie and his team garnered incredible media coverage; the smallest nation made the loudest noise. A long time dream of Reggie’s was to race in a 24-hour mountain bike race. Immediately after returning from Europe he got his wish, competing with friends he made in SXM. Reggie competed in the Puerto Rico 24-hour MTB race and his team took third place. A Stellar 2008 season was followed By an amazing 2009, and so it was recognised at the eighth annual WinnFM ‘Inside Edge’ Sports Awards held in St Kitts and sponsored By KFC. Reggie stood alongside fellow Nevis Sportswoman of the Year Tessil Nisbet, St Kitts Sportswoman of the Year Talissa Browne and 3 time St Kitts Sportsman of the Year Kim Collins.
