(Basseterre, St. Kitts) – A Windsor University, pictured at left, student is missing and presumed drowned after swimming in North Friars Bay.
The missing student, Asama Hadi, is a U.S. citizen.
According to the Royal St. Kitts-Nevis Police, three students from Windsor were swimming at the bay on the afternoon of March 28. Two students were in the water and the third on the beach when the swimmers encountered difficulties.
The student on the shore, along with a student from Ross University, went to their assistance and were able to rescue one.
Mr. Hadi went under the water and has not been seen since.
Emergency personnel and the Coast Guard were summoned to the scene. The rescued student was taken to the hospital while a search for Mr. Hadi was mounted.
He has not been located.
A spokesman for Windsor University said the institution is trying to come to grips with the incident.
“The whole school is shocked. We have never had an incident like this. We are telling the students to be very careful,” the spokesman said.
If Mr. Hadi’s death is confirmed, it will be the fourth drowning this year in the waters around St. Kitts.
Windsor University School of Medicine was established in 1997 on St. Kitts.
