TRAVEL: by Eric Mackenzie Lamb
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the amazing treasures in the Basel Art Museum.
But what I hadn’t realized at the time was that the city was also the location for the creativity of hundreds of images of artistic graffiti along railway tracks or even on top of tall buildings.
What makes these scenes even more unusual is when the images are seen from the window of a train as it passes by. It’s like watching a movie.
By Basel’s laws, graffiti artists are allowed to create their images in special areas, as long as they’re not on private property. This includes permission for them to access the borders of the railway lines (although, of course, they need to be attentive to oncoming trains).
Below are some of the art works which I photographed while riding on the train from Basel to Zurich.
