TRAVEL

A few days ago, I drove from Switzerland to the Principality of Monaco, the world’s smallest country after the city state of the Vatican. Situated on the Mediterranean coast and sandwiched between Italy and the French riviera,  40 percent of its inhabitants are millionaires or billionaires. The country’s geographical position, luxurious lifestyle, and secure environment entice the world’s elite to settle in Monaco, creating an unparalleled density of wealth. Real estate is among the most expensive in the world, at US 58,000 per square meter. The fact that the country does not charge its residents income tax is yet another attraction.

I found a hotel near the center of the city, and when I asked the manager if he had a single room available for two nights, his answer was yes. But when he told me the price, I was shocked: just under US$2,000 per night, with only breakfast included!

No way, I told him. It was unaffordable. He then suggested that I drive to a small village about ten kilometers away which had many small hotels. I followed his advice and found a hotel for just US$120 per night. What a difference! My plan was to return to the city the next morning and take photographs.

Monaco is a global player when it comes to sports and cultural events. The most famous is the Monaco Grand Prix Formula One races. As well as the Monaco Yacht Show and the Monte Carlo TV Festival.

The country also makes generous contributions to support health and education projects in developing countries. Its rising economy began with the opening of its first casino in Monte Carlo, which has a rail connection to Paris.

Monaco was first mentioned by a Greek historian, Hecataus Miletus. In 1191 AD, the Holy Roman Empire granted Monaco to Genoa in return for cracking down on pirates. Recently, one of the country’s most famous events was the marriage of the actress Grace Kelly to Prince Rainer III.
