Lloyd Lewis of Bath Village who has been remanded since April 22 has been convicted and sentenced to two consecutive sentences of three and two years in prison.
Lewis was found guilty of the charges of possession of one 9mm glock pistol and possession of fourteen 9mm rounds of ammunition for which he was sentenced to two years in prison.
The charges originate out of a stop and search exercise, which occurred on Saturday April 22 at the Charlestown Pier.
That evening Lewis, Ivan Jacobs also of Bath Village and Larry Carey of Conaree Village, St. Kitts were arrested and charged with carrying abroad an offensive weapon (a knife).
Lewis was charged with the additional charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Prior to their arrival on Nevis the three men where under police surveillance in St. Kitts who, after the men boarded one of the inter island ferry’s bound for Nevis informed their counterparts who subsequently stopped and search the men when they arrived.
Sources indicated that while the men were being searched Lewis tossed the 9mm-glock pistol into the sea. That action however did not save him for one of the officer dove into the ocean behind the weapon and recovered it.
Further reports out of St. Kitts indicated that the weapon was that which had gone missing from the evidence room at the Basseterre Police Station, which was broken into during 2005.
At the time persons speculated whether or not the break-in was an inside job. Police are now investigating the find.
Jacobs and Carey are currently on bail. In other District ‘C’ Magistrate Court news Nur Sheika of Camps Village, St. Kitts was convicted and fined $400 for the offence of driving without due care and attention.
She is ordered to pay the fine in two months or in default serve one-month imprisonment. The offence was committed on January 20, 2006 at New Castle.
