A new expedition has begun off the coast of Nassau, Bahamas, aiming to uncover important pirate-era shipwrecks.
British archaeologist Dr. Sean Kingsley is leading the project, which is approved by the Bahamian Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation. The focus is on the waters around New Providence Island, known in the 1600s and 1700s as a pirate hotspot.
The main goal is to find the wreck of the Fancy, a 46-gun warship once captained by the famous pirate Henry Avery. Avery became legendary after pulling off a huge robbery in the Indian Ocean and then disappearing. His ship and the treasure he took have never been found. Experts believe the Fancy might have sunk or been purposely destroyed near Nassau.
The team will also look for other pirate wrecks possibly linked to famous names like Blackbeard and Calico Jack. They are using sonar, magnetometers, and dive teams to search the sea floor. The team hopes to find things like weapons, coins, tools, and personal items.
Dr. Kingsley said the Bahamas is “the real home of the pirates of the Caribbean.” He explained that this expedition is different from past treasure hunts because it follows strict scientific methods and is fully monitored by the Bahamian government.
If the search succeeds, it could change how people see Caribbean history by giving solid proof of its pirate past. It could also help tourism by creating museum displays and learning programs. The work will go on for several months, depending on the weather.
